“There is no knowing that does not begin with knowing God.” – John Calvin
The flame of transformation and sanctification from within is fanned by the knowledge of God. It isn’t our willpower that grows us; it’s understanding. And not just any kind of understanding. It’s seeing God’s glory for what it truly is – His attributes on display. Once we can wrap our heads around the fact that this world wasn’t created for us and that it was created to bring glory to God, the lens in which we see our experiences and circumstances begins to transform us.
“Once you become aware that the main business that you are here for is to know God, most of life’s problems fall into place of their own accord.”— J.I. Packer
When we move our eyes away from ourselves and focus them on the beauty of Christ, our will cannot help but be drawn into alignment with His. When we “behold the glory of the Lord,” we start to become like Him. Why? Because once we can see Him as who He really is, it puts our life into perspective.
And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.2 Corinthians 3:18
Most of the time, we are more concerned with our own glory – our reputation, happiness, or comfort – than we are of God’s. When our prayers and petitions fade from “Bless me” to “Show me your glory,” transformation is nearby.
